I’ve been watching Coriolanus. I haven’t seen the ending, but the movie is amazing, and very relevant to our day.

Corialanus-official UK trailer

I think of the many soldiers who fought and died for this country, only to find themselves or their children enslaved by the big government, and the big corporations. What if they were to turn on us, as Rome found Coriolanus at her throat, when she had spurned him?

If you have read this blog, then you may recall that I was musing on the lovely speech of one of my companies big bosses…..someone that I referred to as “D.” You may recall my dark fantasy of Batman swooping in and pummeling the guy to a pulp.

Something struck me, today. I recall him saying a line, “Don’t ever let anyone tell you that I don’t care.” But nearly all of us that work for him knows that he doesn’t care. I can point to too many of his actions….they are the actions of a man who doesn’t care for his workers. Who has no concern for his soldiers. As Emerson said, “What you do speaks so loud that I cannot hear what you say.”

And as I thought of this master of mine, telling me how benevolent he is, how kind he is, how…..merciful he is…..I realized that I had heard this before…..

Am I not merciful

Yes….in the end, the petty dictators of today….they are so very much like the powerful tyrants of yesterday. I wonder which one is really worse……?

Creflo Dollar family needs prayer

Creflo Dollar is/was a successful televangelist who was recently accused of abusing his daughter. He is one of the wifer’s favorites.  I don’t know the truth of the story. Without that, I can’t comment on who is right or wrong. But I can tell you this, someone is guilty of folly…..

Father’s Day 2012 is coming up, and I (Duncan Mcshame,  the negative husband), have no idea of what I want for F Day. The wifer has already gotten me  a good book, any way (the last one written by Billy Graham) and so her bases are covered.

Creflo Dollar had some trouble as a father last Friday. Here is his version of events.

http://newsfeed.time.com/2012/06/10/creflo-dollar-denies-punching-choking-daughter/

In my opinion the daughters are in rebellion and we need to be praying for his daughters.  We need to pray for Creflo and Taffi Dollar as they raise their teenage daughters.

Recently, Bitter Clinger gave some pretty epic commentary about the Consumption Craze of our present culture.

Anyhow, my point is, that like other silly people, I sometimes daydream about the next gift. And usually it is something materialistic. But as I get older, “The gold loses its luster, the jewels cease to sparkle, and the throne room becomes a prison. All that is left, is a father’s love for his child.”

Like Solomon, the only gift I really want is wisdom….

Proverbs 6:1-35 (NIV)  are warnings against folly

1 My son, if you have put up security for your neighbor, 2  if you have been trapped by what you said, ensnared by the words of your mouth, 3 then do this, my son, to free yourself, since you have fallen in to your neighbor’s hands: Go and humble yourself; press your plea with your neighbor!  4 Allow no sleep to your eyes, no slumber to your eyelids, 5 Free yourself like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, like a bird from the snare of the fowler. 6 Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wide! 7 It has no command, no overseer or ruler, 8 yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest.  9 How long will you lie there, you sluggard?  When will you get up from your sleep? 10 A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest – 11 and poverty will come on you like a bandit and scarcity like an armed man.  12 A scoundrel and villain, who goes about a corrupt mouth, 13 who winks with his eye, signals with his feet and motions with his fingers, 14 who plots evil with deceit in his heart – he always stirs up dissension.  15 Therefore disaster will overtake him in an instant; he will suddenly be destroyed – without remedy.  16 There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him:  17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue, 18 hands  that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, 19 a false witness who pours out lies and a man who stirs up dissension among brothers.  20 My son keep your father’s commands and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.  21 Bind them upon your heart forever, fasten them around your neck.  22 When you walk, they will guide you, when you sleep, they will watch over; when you awake, they will speak to you.  23 For these commands, are a lamp, this teaching is a light, and the correction of discipline are the way to life, 24 keeping you from the immoral woman, from the smooth tongue of the wayward wife.  25 Do not lust in your heart after her beauty or let her captivate you with her eyes, 26 for the prostitute reduces you to a loaf of bread, and the adulteress preys upon your very life.  27 Can a man scoop fire into his lap without his clothes being burned? 28 Can a man walk on hot coals without his feet being scorched? 29 So is he who sleeps with another man’s wife; no one who touches her will go unpunished.  30 Men do not despise a thief is he steal to satisfy his hunger when he is starving.  31 Yet if he is caught, he must pay sevenfold, though it costs him all the wealth of his house.  32 But a man who commits adultery lacks judgment; whoever does so destroys himself.  33 Blows and disgrace are his lot, and his shame will never be wiped away; 34 for jealousy arouses a husband’s fury, and he will show no mercy when he takes revenge.  35 He will not accept any compensation; he will refuse the bribe, however great it is.

We all need to be more humble and do what is right according to the Lord.

John Edwards is good example for this.  John Edward is American politician  and he served as U.S. Senator from North Carolina.

John Edwards ran in the race for   Democratic president in 2002 and 2006.  In 2007, John Edwards was caught cheating on his wife, Elizabeth Edwards, who had cancer.  In 2010, Elizabeth Edwards separated from John Edwards.  Sadly, Elizabeth Edwards died on Dec. 6, 2010.  John Edwards suffered the seeds that he sowed and lost his wife due to a separation.  John Edwards was also accused of using a million dollars of donated money from his campaign to hide a sex scandal.  Yesterday, John Edwards was found not guilty.  There was not enough evidence to convict him.  He did apologize and admitted that he was morally wrong.  He said  that he was responsible for his sins.  I hope he is sincere and gets his life on track for Jesus.  Only God knows if he is sincere.  If you seek worldly pleasures you will fail.  When you seek God’s way for your life you will succeed.

Proverbs 2:1-2 (NIV)  is passage about moral benefits of wisdom

1 My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, 2 turning your ear to wisdom  and applying your heart to understanding, 3 and if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, 4 and if you will look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, 5 then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.  6 For the Lord gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.  7 He holds victory in store for the upright, he is shield to those walk blameless, 8 for he guards the course of the just and protects the way of his faithful ones.  9 Then you will understand what is right and just and fair – every good path.  10 For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul.  11 Discretion will protect you, and understanding will guard you.  12 Wisdom will save you from the ways of wicked men, from men whose words are perverse,  13 who leave the straight paths to walk in dark ways, 14 who delight in doing wrong and rejoice in the perverseness of evil, 15 whose paths are crooked and who are devious in their ways.  16 It will save you also from the adulteress, from the wayward wife with her seductive words, 17 who has left the partner of her youth and ignored the covenant she made before God.  18 For her house leads down to death and her paths to the spirits of the dead.  19 None who go to her return or attain the paths of life. 20 Thus you will walk in the ways of good men and keep to the paths of the righteous.  21 For the upright will live in the land, and the blameless will remain in it; 22 but the wicked will be cut off from the land, and the unfaithful will be torn from it.

If I lost it all I will always have Jesus and I will be faithful to him everyday.  I rather have Jesus is song by the Crabb Family.  I rather have Jesus than anything in this word!

Cannibal attacks, bath salts, zombie apocolypse. 2012 may be the end, after all….

Rudy Eugene ate Ronald Poppo’s face. Just when I think the world can’t get any worse, it does. Such a fine young cannibal….

This is the negative husband again. I’ve been hearing these stories about this zombie attack in Miami, Florida. I won’t go into all of the details. You can google them for yourself. Police are blaming a brave new drug, “bath salts,” that are the brave new version of LSD.

Having worked in a town that is quite active with methamphetamine production and use, this really barely amazes me. Cannibalism is about all that is left to see. And everyone is talking about how scary this Rudy Eugene was in his zombie-like mode. His girl friend said that someone performed a voodoo spell on her upstanding boy friend. And I don’t want to make light of the plight of these people….but…..

We live in a world that tells us that morals are relative. There is no wrong….there is no right….and I sleep very well at night. So why was it wrong for Rudy Eugene to get high and eat someone’s face? Yeah, I understand….Ronald Poppo doesn’t like it…but his opinion has no more weight than mine. Why don’t we vote cannibalism to be legal?

Miami cannibal/zombie face revealed, Rudy Eugene identified

These gorgeous, pristine shores are in the Caribbean. The islands are beautiful. I’ve been there. But hundreds of years ago, the native Caribbean’s used to find human flesh a delicacy. Who are we to say they were wrong?

And hey! If that voodoo priest really can make zombies…..in a morally relative universe, who am I to say that he can’t. Of coarse, I don’t want him to make a zombie of me, but who am I to judge?

My point is…..if there isn’t some form of absolute right and wrong (Christian or otherwise, I’m not debating religion, here), then the only real Law is the Law of the Fist. I have a bigger fist than you, so you better do as I say, or I will smash your face in.

I’m high on a drug that causes me to feel no pain, so you can either surrender your bridge-shelter to me, or I will eat your face. And, since I feel no pain, it will take the police six shots to stop me.

And who decides who is right, and who is wrong?

I guess the cops with the guns. Or….with the most guns. Lets face it, if you throw out a belief in the Absolute (still not really talking about God) then what wins is numbers. Strength. Power. And what is the power of steel, compared to the power of flesh? What is the elegant sword compared to the sinews of the hand that wields it?

The Existentialist talk (ad nauseam) about the absurdity of the Universe. I’m not an Existentialist, but after reading The Killing Joke, I think I understand those that believe that the Universe is mad……

Riddle me this, Batman! If there is no Absolute Right and Wrong…..then why did we fight World War II? What was the point of my small home town losing 400 men if the Nazis were no more in the wrong than we are? If there are no Absolutes at all, then the wrongness of killing six million Jews and millions of others exist merely in the accidental happenstance that Germany lost the war!!!!!! No holy cause. We simply had bigger, better, more organized guns.

No…..I can’t believe that. In my darker moments, I long to huddle in the corner with the joker, and howl, and laugh, and cry my despair…..

Strong Son of God, immortal Love,
Whom we, that have not seen thy face,
By faith, and faith alone, embrace,
Believing where we cannot prove;

Thine are these orbs of light and shade;
Thou madest Life in man and brute;
Thou madest Death; and lo, thy foot
Is on the skull which thou hast made.

Thou wilt not leave us in the dust:
Thou madest man, he knows not why,
He thinks he was not made to die;
And thou hast made him: thou art just.

Nobility, humanity, the heroic spirit….does it indeed taste like chicken…..?

The only vague answer I have begins with these lines, from the same poet:

Our little systems have their day;
They have their day and cease to be:
They are but broken lights of thee,
And thou, O Lord, art more than they.

We silly humans make our theories, test our hypotheses….in the end, we merely eat of each others flesh. We devour the hopes and dreams of our fellow-man. And most of us do it with no more remorse than Rudy Eugene. I pray God has mercy on us all…..

Perhaps I am a fool, but I think, though I fight a losing fight, I have to stand for that God who outlasts our little systems. My shots are faltering, fleeting, failing. Like Don Quixote, I know that my cause may even be illusory. But if face eaters are the future….I’ll take my “fictional” God….

Accumulation of Power

Solar eclipse, 2012. No….it hasn’t happened yet….I got this picture from wikipedia. Some folks see it as a sign of the end times. I see it as a metaphor of our times.

I remember two solar eclipses in my lifetime. One happened when I was a kid, and the other, later on, while I was an adult busting my tail trying to make a living. The first one, I “saw” via some paper contraption that my teachers set up so that we could view the shadow of the image without burning out our tender young eyes (some of you may think I made that story up…but yes, I remember a time when more than two teachers per state actually cared about kids). The second one, I slept through, because I was working nights at the time, and had to sleep during the days (like a vampire) or not at all.

And I shall miss this one, as well. From what I can gather, Oklahoma won’t be very much in the shadow of the eclipse at all.

I’ve been writing a lot (perhaps too much) about the potential, emminant fall of the Republic. I’m writing all of this in the hopes that maybe, like in the 70’s, this is merely an eclipse of liberty. I’m hoping that the sun of Liberty will pull free soon from behind the moon of despotism, and we shall revive the spirit of our Father’s once again.

But I fear, all too often, that this is actual Twilight, and the day may be over for us.

We’ve established (at least, we’ve tried to establish) in previous posts that the accumulation of power usurped from all three branches of power amounts to tyranny, even if that power is democratically elected.

The accumulation of all powers, legislative, executive, and judiciary, in the same hands, whether of one, a few, or many, and whether hereditary, self-appointed, or elective, may justly be pronounced the very definition of tyranny.-Federalist 47. Madison.

https://noxforchristmas.wordpress.com/2012/05/11/tyranny-the-best-mothers-day-gift-idea/

Let’s keep exploring what The Federalist Papers say about our times.

1. The Founding Father‘s knew that governments tend to sacrifice long term securities and freedoms for short term agrendizement. They constructed the

The Founding Father’s pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor to give their children secure lives of liberty. We’ve turned our backs on all of that.

Constitution in a deliberate fashion to alleviate that short sightedness.

Is it to be imagined that a legislative assembly, consisting of a hundred or two hundred members, eagerly bent on some favorite object, and breaking through the restraints of the Constitution in pursuit of it, would be arrested in their careers by considerations drawn from a censorial revision of their conduct at the future distance of ten, fifteen, or twenty years?-Federalist 50. Madison.

The idea Madison is explaining, here, is why they made the Constitution amendable, but also made it difficult to do so. If it were easily amended, than a tyranny would be easily established. If it were difficult to amend, then a tyranny would be harder to establish. But flaws in the Constitution could still be corrected. But, as we established earlier (https://noxforchristmas.wordpress.com/2012/05/04/tyranny-who-cares-if-im-loved-or-feared-as-long-as-im-obeyed/) the Constitution is a worthless piece of paper if the people don’t honor and revere it. Since we’ve thrown it aside, the Powers that Be are free to do as they with.

And they wish to rule….

Executive orders from…..

Presidents & Congress ignoring the Constitution

Don’t click on it….I nabbed the picture from Amazon.com. There was a time when we thought Congressional Statesmen would face the Devil to preserve our freedoms. Now we assume they make deals with him to enslave us to their will…

2. The political parties that were supposed to compete with each other have become carbon copies of each other. Some of the Founding Father’s actually saw the danger of parties cooperating instead of competing.

Is it to be presumed that any other State, at the same or any other given period, will be exempt from them [political parties]? Such an event ought to be neither presumed nor desired; because an extinction of parties necessarily implies either a universal alarm for the public safety, or an absolute extinction of liberty.-Federalist 50. Madison.

One of the reasons I write so harshly about the Republican party is because I am a Republican. I want them to stand for the conservative values I’ve come to embrace. I don’t want them to just talk about those values, and then vote the same, or worse, than Democrats. That’s as bad as a pastor preaching the Bible to me on Sunday and heading to the strip clubs to cheat on his wife all the rest of the week!

We don’t want perfect party unity. We want opposition. So that the Powers That Be are fighting each other, and not putting us behind the 8 ball. But that has been the history of the last twenty (or hundred) years.

John Stossel: The myth that Republicans want to shrink govt.

As Stossel states in the above video….a thief is better than a Congressman, because a thief doesn’t demand to be thanked when he picks your pocket. One of the reasons why I hate my job is because bosses insist that I work in misery and pain, and yet smile while I’m doing it. I don’t doubt this is universal. We don’t care how much our servants hurt. We just want them to smile.

The Joker smiles a lot. I think I understand how he got his scars.

David Barton the historian that stands up

This book is not to be confused with the sit-com, The Jeffersons….

David Barton says that “secular is religion free, but Thomas Jefferson was not anitreligious.”

Thomas Jeffferson, David Barton, and Ron Paul: all three have stood for liberty and Christian values. David Barton wrote The Jefferson Lies.

For these great men of God I have one scripture:  Matthew 5:11-13  ” Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.  Rejoice and be glad because great is your reward in heave, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”

We continue to praise the Lord like the story Jehoshaphat best told this song of Don Francisco.

Remember that the bible says that the battle is the Lord and the Lord will fight for you!!  Praise the Lord forever more!

David Barton is WallBuilders  which is pro-family organization America’s forgotten history and heroes.  Great man of God to listen to and learn about history.  Here is link:

Ron Paul supporters are praying and it is paying off.   Here is the story.

http://www.alaskadispatch.com/article/alaska-gops-new-chair-god-prevailed-victory-ron-paul-supporters

If you hadn’t guessed….the wifer wants you all to know about David Barton. He is one of our personal heroes, because he digs into history, and tries to demonstrate the Christian foundation of our nation. He’s the first person that ever inspired the wifer with any love of history (rather as Ron Paul was the first person to inspire her with an interest in things political).

He’s recently become famous outside of the evangelical circles, because he appeared on  The Daily Show, with Jon Stewart. And, of coarse, a lot of people really feel that Jon Stewart got the best of David Barton. Blogger after blogger is making fun of Barton, and calling him out as a liar, and praising Jon Stewart for revealing what a wacko Barton is. Silly Christians….believing in God is so bourgeois! Only the illiterate still believe in God.

Don’t get me wrong. I actually like Jon Stewart. I’ve posted some of his stuff on this blog. And I don’t want to get hyper-critical of him when, to be honest, I’ve only had time to watch a few random bits and pieces from the interview. It would be unfair to say that “Jon Stewart is a bad person,” when most of my information is coming second hand.

What I don’t like, is the general attitude that some folks have that, if someone makes fun of something, that something is discredited. We make fun of David Barton because he has some beliefs that don’t match ours, and that proves that he’s wrong. Ron Paul is just a Texas hick that keeps babbling about liberty…..and that proves he’s wrong. The Jews were silly money grubbing people with funny accents….so its all right to take all their money, move them into death camps, and incinerate them. God has a lot of imperfect folks that tell me I shouldn’t have sex with the salacious prostitute…..some of them even think I should only sleep with my wife……being funny makes us wrong.

God is not mocked.

We can laugh all we want, but there are things that are, actually, inherently, if not obviously, true. You don’t want to agree with me that there is a God. That is fine. But surely you agree that slavery is evil. That war, even when it is necessary, is a horrible blight. And that all sane people everywhere will always prefer liberty to tyranny, if they are simply informed how to get it, and have the character to stand and fight for it.

And surely, we all agree (great God in Heaven, I pray we all agree) that a historical truth is a historical truth. Maybe Barton doesn’t have all of his facts right. Or maybe he misinterprets some things. But I think it ironic that some of the people accusing him of fabricating history will vote for history fabricators themselves.

Tyranny: who cares if I’m loved or feared….as long as I’m obeyed…..

Just how long can we endure…..?

Ding dong bin Laden‘s dead. Now Scarecrow will get a brain, the Tin Man will get a heart, the Cowardly Lion will get some courage, and we can all click our ruby slippers together and go back home to Kansas. Truly we live in euphoric times. “Over the Rainbow” is where we live.

So why do I feel like I’m being crushed under the heals of petty, thoughtless fools who barely care whether I live or die?

C. S. Lewis wrote, in That Hideous Strength, about a collegiate/government/corporate organization called the National Institute for Coordinated Experiments (NICE). This lovely organization was hell-bent on running everything, and everyone’s life. People would no longer need to do their own thinking….the Head (the demonic CEO of NICE) would do all the thinking for us. In the novel, angelic forces rain down wrath on NICE, and save our world from the despotism of petty tyranny.

In real life….I sometimes wonder if the angels haven’t turned their backs on us.

Tyranny has been talked about for the last three or four millenia. I’ve been reading, in my very fleeting moments of spare time, The Federalist Papers. I’m going to try to relate how this

Our Founding Father‘s envisioned a world where Liberty was victorious over Tyranny. Modern politicians would love to see them switch places…

book is relevant in the twenty-first century. I’ll begin by telling how it does NOT apply to our times.

1. Liberty can only be held by an industrious, vigilant people who are willing to fight to preserve it. Slavish people can never be free.

But ambitious encroachments of the federal government on the authority of the State governments would not excite the opposition of a single State, or of a few States only. They would be signals of general alarm. Every [State] government would espouse the common cause. A correspondence would be opened. Plans of resistance would be concerted. One spirit would animate and conduct the whole. The same combinations, in short, would result from an apprehension of the federal, as was produced by the dread of a foreign, yoke; and unless the projected innovations should be voluntarily renounced, the same appeal to a trial of force would be made in the one case as was made in the other. But what degree of madness could ever drive the federal government to such an extremity?- Federalist 46, Madison.

Governments Should be Afraid of Their People

I sometimes fear that maybe, the politicians are, in a morbid sense, right. Perhaps the Constitution is no longer relevant. Because the Founding Father’s meant the document to be a guiding light for a free and independent people. A people determined to acquire the blessings of liberty. The Constitution can have no meaning for someone who is willing to barter away their liberties for bread and circuses. We are descended from patriots and pioneers who lived by the creed: “Give me liberty, or give me death!” Now we live by the creed of “Give me my beer, and give me football! And while you’re at it, give me a free cell phone and free health care!” The people of today would never have rebelled against the British. But then, the people of today would never have left Britain in the first place.

2. The Founding Father’s established the Constitution believing that people were, in the main, rational. They had no precepts laid down to protect it from a populous debased by over consumption of television and methamphetamines. The Constitution is meant to govern a sane people.

That the people and the States should, for a sufficient period of time, elect an uninterrupted succession of men ready to betray both; that the traitors should, throughout this period, uniformly and systematically pursue some fixed plan for the extension of the military establishment; that the governments and the people of the States should silently and patiently behold the gathering storm and continue to supply the materials until it should be prepared to burst on their own heads must appear to everyone more like the incoherent dreams of a delirious jealousy, or the misjudged exaggerations of a counterfeit zeal, then like the sober apprehensions of genuine patriotism.-Federalist 46. Madison.

Too bad…..what Madison describes as the “incoherent dreams of a delirious jealousy,” we get to call, “reality.”

Isn’t that NICE?

White House Correspondents Dinner…..Democracy tastes like chicken

Put on your suit. Get your hair and nails done. We’re going to go put on a show. We’ll dazzle the world with all our razmataz. Hollywood will be there. Anybody who is anybody will be there. Kim Kardashian (I still think the name should be given to a species of monster in Star Wars) will be there. Maybe she can teach me to get rich by marrying and divorcing the right people. Spielberg and Clooney will be there. And Lindsey Lohan. All the greatest political minds….the best journalists in the land.

But then, as I learned on the cartoon series, Daria, why study a subject, when you can spend your time more productively by networking.

And Washington/Hollywood did network this weekend. This coterie of self-congratulation spent its time cracking jokes, but some of us aren’t fooled. We can see a committee of mutual admiration for what it is.

Rick Santorum was there. That doesn’t surprise me. Ron Paul wasn’t there. That doesn’t surprise me. According to Fox News (don’t ask me….they came up

The White House Correspondents Association was formed in 1914 as a protest to the rumor that Congress was going to limit the reporters that had access to the President. Presidents since Wilson have turned this to their advantage.

first on the Google search)  every President since Coolidge has attended these functions. That fails to surprise me, as well. The White House Correspondents Association was originally set up as a kind of union of reporters who were concerned that the government was getting too over-reaching in the way they were regulating press access to the President. But, like I learned from listening to Longshanks on Braveheart, “You must find the good in everything…when you are king.”

So the two industries, Press and Government, realized in the twenties that if they worked together, they could gain great wealth and great power. And, since the Government perforce enjoys its monopoly without opposition, and the Press was technically scattered across thousands of newspaper companies (the radio and movies were very new mediums, and TV was still twenty years away), it probably didn’t seem so dangerous to the people of the time.

But times are radically different, now.

When I was in American Government 101, the text-book listed the media as a fourth branch of government. And the bureaucracy as a fifth. Now, I don’t want to get into a debate about the accuracy of this….but if accredited textbooks are realizing this possibility, we should, as “informed” voters, be willing to discuss the implications of the government-media complex.

I don’t agree with everything that is said by right-wing radio pundits, but I think that one of the most brilliant speeches ever was Michael Savages speech from about 15 or so year ago about the subject.

Government Media Complex

Joseph Conrad wrote about it in The Heart of Darkness. In our times, it became the movie Apocalypse Now. We pretend to be so civilized, but if you look in our eyes, there is hate, fear, pain....and also hope.

Does anyone else remember the Vietnam War? I’ll grant you, I was very young at the time. But I was a very strange kid. I started watching and listening to the news when I was about three years old. I still very dimly remember seeing images from the last years of that war. I was too young to understand, but now, years later, I can see that war (which, I’ll grant, would have been extremely controversial even if the whole debate had been on the up-and-up) was largely lost because the media shaped the public will to oppose it. That demonstrates its power.

My argument is not whether the media was evil because of its stance on that war. Assuming that great power….a power that proved greater than the three branches of government……how much greater would it be in the hands of one of the branches of government.

“Is it true that force and right are necessarily on the same side in republican governments? May not the minor party possess such a superiority of pecuniary resources…or of secret succors from foreign powers, as will render it superior also in an appeal to the sword?…Nothing can be more chimerical than to imagine that in a trial of actual force victory may be calculated by the rules which prevail in a census of the inhabitants, or which determine the even of an election!”-Federalist 43. Madison.
