Election Eve: VOTE

I have since changed my mind about not voting.  The first reason is Romney sat down and talked with Billy Graham.  Billy Graham is someone who I highly respect.  The second reason is that Romney tend to support Israel.  In NIV Bible Genesis 12: 2 -3 2 I will make you into  a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.  3 I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all the peoples on earth will be blessed through you.  The Bible is making a reference about Israel.  The decision is yours get out and help make a change VOTE!

No more night

Today is the longest day of the year.  It is known as the summer solstice.  I noticed today that it took longer to get dark today.  This reminds me that  Jesus is the light of the world.

John 11:9 -10 (NIV) passage: 9 Jesus answered “Are there not twelve hours of daylight?  A man who walks by day will not stumble, for he sees by this world’s light. 10 It is when he walks by night that he stumbles, for he has no light.”

When we get to heaven there will no more night, because Jesus is light.  There is song by David Phelps “No More Night” it is about how God will make all things new no more night, no more pain, no more tears…we will live in light of the risen Lamb.

The pains of this world, the schemes of our dark rulers, the griefs that bind us in the chains of despair, all of these things will be passed away. They will be purged away in the glorious fire of His Love. And we shall see, at last, not the two-faced thugs that pretend to be our leaders, but the true Face of that Love that will finally lead us home.

Another “what the huh!!?” moment

I don’t have much to say, currently. I’ve intensified my job search.   So here are a couple of random things that may warm your heart, while they leave your mind in confusion.

Surprise! Alice Cooper is a Christian

Some may not get this next one….I mainly just love the intro with Orson Wells. It’s like something I would want to have heard from my own father….or something that I would love to tell my own son…..

Manowar-Defender (original version)

Father! Father! Father!

This letter ends my search.

I’ll live your dream.

Now passed on to me.

In my version of the song, civilization has fallen, and a Defender needs to arise to save the innocent from the dark deeds of the foul fiends that have corrupted and darkened our world. The Corporation shall not always have its say. And the downtrodden of the world will one day find a Champion that will avenge them. The blood of the saints will not be forgotten. precious in God’s sight is the blood of His saints.

Creflo Dollar family needs prayer

Creflo Dollar is/was a successful televangelist who was recently accused of abusing his daughter. He is one of the wifer’s favorites.  I don’t know the truth of the story. Without that, I can’t comment on who is right or wrong. But I can tell you this, someone is guilty of folly…..

Father’s Day 2012 is coming up, and I (Duncan Mcshame,  the negative husband), have no idea of what I want for F Day. The wifer has already gotten me  a good book, any way (the last one written by Billy Graham) and so her bases are covered.

Creflo Dollar had some trouble as a father last Friday. Here is his version of events.

http://newsfeed.time.com/2012/06/10/creflo-dollar-denies-punching-choking-daughter/

In my opinion the daughters are in rebellion and we need to be praying for his daughters.  We need to pray for Creflo and Taffi Dollar as they raise their teenage daughters.

Recently, Bitter Clinger gave some pretty epic commentary about the Consumption Craze of our present culture.

Anyhow, my point is, that like other silly people, I sometimes daydream about the next gift. And usually it is something materialistic. But as I get older, “The gold loses its luster, the jewels cease to sparkle, and the throne room becomes a prison. All that is left, is a father’s love for his child.”

Conan the Barbarian-King Osric

Like Solomon, the only gift I really want is wisdom….

Proverbs 6:1-35 (NIV)  are warnings against folly

1 My son, if you have put up security for your neighbor, 2  if you have been trapped by what you said, ensnared by the words of your mouth, 3 then do this, my son, to free yourself, since you have fallen in to your neighbor’s hands: Go and humble yourself; press your plea with your neighbor!  4 Allow no sleep to your eyes, no slumber to your eyelids, 5 Free yourself like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, like a bird from the snare of the fowler. 6 Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wide! 7 It has no command, no overseer or ruler, 8 yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest.  9 How long will you lie there, you sluggard?  When will you get up from your sleep? 10 A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest – 11 and poverty will come on you like a bandit and scarcity like an armed man.  12 A scoundrel and villain, who goes about a corrupt mouth, 13 who winks with his eye, signals with his feet and motions with his fingers, 14 who plots evil with deceit in his heart – he always stirs up dissension.  15 Therefore disaster will overtake him in an instant; he will suddenly be destroyed – without remedy.  16 There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him:  17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue, 18 hands  that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, 19 a false witness who pours out lies and a man who stirs up dissension among brothers.  20 My son keep your father’s commands and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.  21 Bind them upon your heart forever, fasten them around your neck.  22 When you walk, they will guide you, when you sleep, they will watch over; when you awake, they will speak to you.  23 For these commands, are a lamp, this teaching is a light, and the correction of discipline are the way to life, 24 keeping you from the immoral woman, from the smooth tongue of the wayward wife.  25 Do not lust in your heart after her beauty or let her captivate you with her eyes, 26 for the prostitute reduces you to a loaf of bread, and the adulteress preys upon your very life.  27 Can a man scoop fire into his lap without his clothes being burned? 28 Can a man walk on hot coals without his feet being scorched? 29 So is he who sleeps with another man’s wife; no one who touches her will go unpunished.  30 Men do not despise a thief is he steal to satisfy his hunger when he is starving.  31 Yet if he is caught, he must pay sevenfold, though it costs him all the wealth of his house.  32 But a man who commits adultery lacks judgment; whoever does so destroys himself.  33 Blows and disgrace are his lot, and his shame will never be wiped away; 34 for jealousy arouses a husband’s fury, and he will show no mercy when he takes revenge.  35 He will not accept any compensation; he will refuse the bribe, however great it is.

We all need to be more humble and do what is right according to the Lord.

Father’s Day 2012: 7 moments from films that defined Fatherhood to me

Fatherhood used to be honored, venerated, respected. We even called God, “Our Father.” In the fifties, sixties, and early seventies, t.v. gave us images of wise, patient, intelligent Dads…..

This is the negative husband, rearing his ugly bald head into the fray, once again, and for no good purpose. Father’s Day is approaching, and I can’t help but gloat about it. Being a father is one of the very few positive things in my life. There is nothing short of knowing Christ that can compare with hearing your son call you “Dad.”

But those of you who know me best, or have followed this blog with extremely acute attention (and I know all of you revolve your lives around my blog) know that my own relationship with my father was…well…..less than positive.

With that warning/caviet, I’m going to write something just for fun. Hopefully, it won’t be quite as depressing as other things I’ve written.

So, without further ado….here are 7 moments from films that defined Fatherhood to me.

In reverse order.

7. Rhett Butler in Gone With the Wind

Yeah, I know…everyone thinks of romance and burning Atlanta and Rhett carrying Scarlett up the stares for…..you know…..But I think of a heart-broken Rhett, who has lost the only child produced out of his union with the only woman he has ever really loved, and the grief that nearly shatters this rogue who we thought was so strong and heartless……

Times sure have changed….

Gone With the Wind-Bonnie’s Death 1939

6. Sean Connery teaching the Highlander

Granted, Ramirez isn’t Connor’s father in the movie, but he is his mentor. He’s very much like a Father to the young immortal in Highlander.
Indeed the message in the next clip is one that all father’s need to give to their children, “You have no knowledge whatsoever of your potential.”

Highlander-McLeod meets Ramirez

5. The Angel of Music

This one is a little darker than the rest. The Phantom of the Opera is one of the most complicated stories for all the intricate relations between Christine and the Phantom. But he is her mentor, and sometimes she thinks he is the Angel of Music sent by her dead father, or is indeed her father. The

Commodus killing his father, Marcus Aurelius. The sins of the Father’s are sometimes visited on the sons. And sometimes, it is the other way about….

relationship is darkly similar to the way parents and children sometimes love each other, and sometimes are very cruel to each other…..

Wishing you were Somehow Here Again

4. The Last of the Mohicans

I’ve always had dark dreams of being the last of my kind. Often I’d dream of being a lost elven prince, or the last noble member of a dead race. If ever there was a kick-tail dad up against hard odds, it is the father in this movie.

The Last of the Mohicans Final Battle

The last of the Mohicans avenging his son. How many people live to see the hopes and dreams of their children snuffed out….

3. Vader saving his son, Luke

What I loved about the trilogy, is that I had an alcoholic father. So I knew what it was to be disappointed in my parentage. I knew what it was to fear, and I’m sorry, but even what it was to hate, my father. And I know the deep yearning in a child or a young man’s heart that his dark father would change, and would love him. The ending for me was less bitter sweet….but that is for another post….another time….

Return of the Jedi: Vader and Luke

Luke’s two father figures duke it out…..if only more family disputes could be this simple….

2. The father from Apocolypto

One of the most important gifts a father gives to his son is teaching him to be a man. I got most of my lessons from movies and books (hence, this post). This lesson came to me late in life, but it was one of the most eloquent I have seen.

“Fear is a sickness…..I did not raise you to see you live in fear.”

Apocolypto-Fear

1. Osric in Conan the Barbarian

Most of you will be going, “What the huh!?” But this is the scene where I started to

The greatest line I’ve ever heard on cinema about fatherhood

love the movie. I pretty well memorized it. The line often goes through my head as I work. “There comes a time when the jewels cease to sparkle, when the gold loses its luster, and all that is left is a father’s love for his child.”

In the spirit of overkill, there are some honorable mentions.

Mel Gibson has two. The patriot, and, surprisingly, Longshanks.

Mel Gibson the patriot tomahawk fight scenes

Longshanks

To me, this was the greatest comic book of all time.

Last of all….Batman. The comic book at left I bought just after I had run away from home when I was seventeen. I know I was the “rebellious” son…but I found myself identifying with Batman. It is a symptom of being the child of an alcoholic, that you feel like the parent. I felt the duel edged pain of wondering if Dad even cared if I was gone….and the grief of being a “father” who has lost his “son.” A Death in the Family demonstrated that dark pain perfectly to a seventeen year old. I skipped a few meals, and bought the comic. Its one of the few possessions I still have from those times.

Happy father’s day, everyone……

Wisdom of God, Wrath of God, Wrath of the Titan: Consequences of defying God

Titans, in Greek Mythology, were powerful Beings that even gods could barely contend with.  The ship, Titanic, was named for these Beings that were equal with gods.  Everyone thought that the Titanic was indestructible.  Who knows but that the Titanic was cursed by the name.  God does not like to be mocked, he does not like anyone to be over him.  I am not saying that he caused all those people to die, but we have to be careful not to put any gods before our God.

If men were angels, no government would be necessary.  If angels were to govern men, neither external nor internal controls in government would be necessary.  In framing government which is to be administered by men over men, the great difficulty lies in this: you must first enable the government to control the government; and in the next place oblige it to control itself.  Fed. 51 Madison

Proverbs 4:1 – 27 (NIV): Wisdom is Supreme

1 Listen, my sons, to a father’s instruction; pay attention and gain understanding.  2 I give you sound learning, so do not forsake my teaching.  3 When I was a boy in my father’s house, still tender, and only child of my mother, 4 he taught me and said, ” Lay hold of my words with all your heart; keep my commands and you will live.  5 Get wisdom, get understanding; do not forget my words or swerve from them.  6 Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over.  7 Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom.  Though it cost all you have, get understanding.  8 Esteem her, and she will exalt you; embrace her, and she will honor you.  9 She will set a garland of grace on your head and present you with a crown of splendor.  10 Listen my son accept what I say, and the years of your life will be many.  11 I guide you in the way of wisdom and lead you along straight paths.  12 When you walk your steps will not be hampered; when you run, you will not stumble.  13 Hold on to instruction, do not let it go; guard it well, for it is your life.  14 Do not set foot on path of the wicked or walk in the way of evil men.  15 Avoid it, do not travel on it; turn from it and go on your way.  16 For they cannot sleep till they do evil; they are robbed of slumber till they make someone fall.  17 They eat the bread of wickedness and drink the wine of violence.  18 The path of righteous is like the first gleam dawn, shining ever brighter till the full light of the day, 19 But the way of the wicked is like deep darkness;  they do not know what makes them stumble.  20 My son, pay attention to what I say; listen closely to my words.  21 Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; 22 for they are life to those who find them and health to a man’s whole body.  23 Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.  24 Put away perversity from your mouth; keep corrupt talk far from your lips.  25 Let your eyes look straight ahead, fix your gaze directly before you.  26 Make level paths for your feet and take only ways that are firm.  27 Do not swerve to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil.

Cannibal attacks, bath salts, zombie apocolypse. 2012 may be the end, after all….

Rudy Eugene ate Ronald Poppo’s face. Just when I think the world can’t get any worse, it does. Such a fine young cannibal….

This is the negative husband again. I’ve been hearing these stories about this zombie attack in Miami, Florida. I won’t go into all of the details. You can google them for yourself. Police are blaming a brave new drug, “bath salts,” that are the brave new version of LSD.

Having worked in a town that is quite active with methamphetamine production and use, this really barely amazes me. Cannibalism is about all that is left to see. And everyone is talking about how scary this Rudy Eugene was in his zombie-like mode. His girl friend said that someone performed a voodoo spell on her upstanding boy friend. And I don’t want to make light of the plight of these people….but…..

We live in a world that tells us that morals are relative. There is no wrong….there is no right….and I sleep very well at night. So why was it wrong for Rudy Eugene to get high and eat someone’s face? Yeah, I understand….Ronald Poppo doesn’t like it…but his opinion has no more weight than mine. Why don’t we vote cannibalism to be legal?

Miami cannibal/zombie face revealed, Rudy Eugene identified

These gorgeous, pristine shores are in the Caribbean. The islands are beautiful. I’ve been there. But hundreds of years ago, the native Caribbean’s used to find human flesh a delicacy. Who are we to say they were wrong?

And hey! If that voodoo priest really can make zombies…..in a morally relative universe, who am I to say that he can’t. Of coarse, I don’t want him to make a zombie of me, but who am I to judge?

My point is…..if there isn’t some form of absolute right and wrong (Christian or otherwise, I’m not debating religion, here), then the only real Law is the Law of the Fist. I have a bigger fist than you, so you better do as I say, or I will smash your face in.

I’m high on a drug that causes me to feel no pain, so you can either surrender your bridge-shelter to me, or I will eat your face. And, since I feel no pain, it will take the police six shots to stop me.

And who decides who is right, and who is wrong?

I guess the cops with the guns. Or….with the most guns. Lets face it, if you throw out a belief in the Absolute (still not really talking about God) then what wins is numbers. Strength. Power. And what is the power of steel, compared to the power of flesh? What is the elegant sword compared to the sinews of the hand that wields it?

The Existentialist talk (ad nauseam) about the absurdity of the Universe. I’m not an Existentialist, but after reading The Killing Joke, I think I understand those that believe that the Universe is mad……

Riddle me this, Batman! If there is no Absolute Right and Wrong…..then why did we fight World War II? What was the point of my small home town losing 400 men if the Nazis were no more in the wrong than we are? If there are no Absolutes at all, then the wrongness of killing six million Jews and millions of others exist merely in the accidental happenstance that Germany lost the war!!!!!! No holy cause. We simply had bigger, better, more organized guns.

No…..I can’t believe that. In my darker moments, I long to huddle in the corner with the joker, and howl, and laugh, and cry my despair…..

Strong Son of God, immortal Love,
Whom we, that have not seen thy face,
By faith, and faith alone, embrace,
Believing where we cannot prove;

Thine are these orbs of light and shade;
Thou madest Life in man and brute;
Thou madest Death; and lo, thy foot
Is on the skull which thou hast made.

Thou wilt not leave us in the dust:
Thou madest man, he knows not why,
He thinks he was not made to die;
And thou hast made him: thou art just.

Nobility, humanity, the heroic spirit….does it indeed taste like chicken…..?

The only vague answer I have begins with these lines, from the same poet:

Our little systems have their day;
They have their day and cease to be:
They are but broken lights of thee,
And thou, O Lord, art more than they.

We silly humans make our theories, test our hypotheses….in the end, we merely eat of each others flesh. We devour the hopes and dreams of our fellow-man. And most of us do it with no more remorse than Rudy Eugene. I pray God has mercy on us all…..

Perhaps I am a fool, but I think, though I fight a losing fight, I have to stand for that God who outlasts our little systems. My shots are faltering, fleeting, failing. Like Don Quixote, I know that my cause may even be illusory. But if face eaters are the future….I’ll take my “fictional” God….
