Tyranny: who cares if I’m loved or feared….as long as I’m obeyed…..

Just how long can we endure…..?

Ding dong bin Laden‘s dead. Now Scarecrow will get a brain, the Tin Man will get a heart, the Cowardly Lion will get some courage, and we can all click our ruby slippers together and go back home to Kansas. Truly we live in euphoric times. “Over the Rainbow” is where we live.

So why do I feel like I’m being crushed under the heals of petty, thoughtless fools who barely care whether I live or die?

C. S. Lewis wrote, in That Hideous Strength, about a collegiate/government/corporate organization called the National Institute for Coordinated Experiments (NICE). This lovely organization was hell-bent on running everything, and everyone’s life. People would no longer need to do their own thinking….the Head (the demonic CEO of NICE) would do all the thinking for us. In the novel, angelic forces rain down wrath on NICE, and save our world from the despotism of petty tyranny.

In real life….I sometimes wonder if the angels haven’t turned their backs on us.

Tyranny has been talked about for the last three or four millenia. I’ve been reading, in my very fleeting moments of spare time, The Federalist Papers. I’m going to try to relate how this

Our Founding Father‘s envisioned a world where Liberty was victorious over Tyranny. Modern politicians would love to see them switch places…

book is relevant in the twenty-first century. I’ll begin by telling how it does NOT apply to our times.

1. Liberty can only be held by an industrious, vigilant people who are willing to fight to preserve it. Slavish people can never be free.

But ambitious encroachments of the federal government on the authority of the State governments would not excite the opposition of a single State, or of a few States only. They would be signals of general alarm. Every [State] government would espouse the common cause. A correspondence would be opened. Plans of resistance would be concerted. One spirit would animate and conduct the whole. The same combinations, in short, would result from an apprehension of the federal, as was produced by the dread of a foreign, yoke; and unless the projected innovations should be voluntarily renounced, the same appeal to a trial of force would be made in the one case as was made in the other. But what degree of madness could ever drive the federal government to such an extremity?- Federalist 46, Madison.

Governments Should be Afraid of Their People

I sometimes fear that maybe, the politicians are, in a morbid sense, right. Perhaps the Constitution is no longer relevant. Because the Founding Father’s meant the document to be a guiding light for a free and independent people. A people determined to acquire the blessings of liberty. The Constitution can have no meaning for someone who is willing to barter away their liberties for bread and circuses. We are descended from patriots and pioneers who lived by the creed: “Give me liberty, or give me death!” Now we live by the creed of “Give me my beer, and give me football! And while you’re at it, give me a free cell phone and free health care!” The people of today would never have rebelled against the British. But then, the people of today would never have left Britain in the first place.

2. The Founding Father’s established the Constitution believing that people were, in the main, rational. They had no precepts laid down to protect it from a populous debased by over consumption of television and methamphetamines. The Constitution is meant to govern a sane people.

That the people and the States should, for a sufficient period of time, elect an uninterrupted succession of men ready to betray both; that the traitors should, throughout this period, uniformly and systematically pursue some fixed plan for the extension of the military establishment; that the governments and the people of the States should silently and patiently behold the gathering storm and continue to supply the materials until it should be prepared to burst on their own heads must appear to everyone more like the incoherent dreams of a delirious jealousy, or the misjudged exaggerations of a counterfeit zeal, then like the sober apprehensions of genuine patriotism.-Federalist 46. Madison.

Too bad…..what Madison describes as the “incoherent dreams of a delirious jealousy,” we get to call, “reality.”

Isn’t that NICE?

“So why do I feel like I’m being crushed under the heals of petty, thoughtless fools who barely care whether I live or die?”

The simplest and shortest answer would be to point out that they don’t “barely care.” The truth is “they” don’t care at all, so long as your taxes are paid up.

We have both seen the turning of the tides in the last 20 years. The gradual slide into oblivion, as it were, of the people and policies of this once great nation. I was young but I remember the Reagan years, and what seemed at the time to be a marginal return to sanity. The fall of the Soviets, the turnaround from the misery of the Carter years, and the catapulting of the US to become the last true “Superpower.”

Now we are left with the broken remains. Politicians who are so engrossed and entrenched in power as to wield what woud seem the authority of godhood. The degredation of the individual and the family. The replacement of the family with “the village to raise the child” has left us with children that never mature and see the “village” as the source and sole provider.

The “education system” that everyone complains about has worked perfectly according to design. Creating workers who are smart enough to do their jobs, but not so intelligent that they realize they are only cogs in the machine. The fall is almost complete. Who cares if Johnny can’t read, did you see that 40 yard pass. Screw buiding a library we need a new stadium. Ration and logic have been abandoned for self-esteem and political correctness. History is a lie, Science and mathematics are only used for sports stats. Reading is a completely foreign concept. God help you if you try to write a cogent sentence.

Due to the crumbling family, and the absolute joke that is the public education system, we are left with the perfect slave. Keep them entertained, and just well fed enough that they feel they have something to lose, and they will march happily off the cliff. All of this is by design.

So do you still think they “barely care?”

    I had to ask.

    Truly the US has fallen.

“that the governments and the people of the States should silently and patiently behold the gathering storm and continue to supply the materials until it should be prepared to burst on their own heads” -Madison

“Silently and patiently” should be replaced with “jubilantly”

You’re right on many different levels. You and I both know, that as long as we pay our taxes, don’t make waves, and continue, like the muscle head in the fitness advertisement, to “pick up things and put them down….” as long as we do these things, we may live in very relative peace. Should we try to beat the system, they’ll rain down their wrath on us. Like “D” and the Hall of Shame.
Its hard for me to imagine the events of the last twenty years without some degree of self-disgust. If someone had told me twenty years ago that I would simply watch passively as my nation was dismantled and sold to the highest bidder, I’d have laughed at them. But, other than this silly blog, that is exactly what I have done. Yeah, I’ve cast my votes…hopefully for the right people. But it just doesn’t seem like enough, to me.
I for one miss Reagan. I don’t want to get too weird about it. I know he wasn’t perfect….there’s a couple of things that made me scratch my head about him. But his Presidency restored our pride in being Americans. That has since been apologized away by Obummer.
The politicians do indeed believe they are Gods. They jet around the world, taking six figure vacations for three weeks, sleeping with prostitutes and profiting from Al Queda Opium poppies. They spend literal years without doing their jobs (anyone remember when the legislature last passed an actual budget….? But then, as we’ve established, the Constitution is an outmoded missive that was written for despotic capitalists…..like the pioneer that maybe saw a thousand dollars in his whole lifetime. Or the homesteader whose wife bore him eight children on the brutal frontier, only to bury four of them because life was so hard.
But the pioneers weren’t looking for a cushy life with free cell phones, free chips, free pop, and free porn. They were looking for freedom. For a place where they could raise their kids to worship God their way, and not the king’s way. They wanted a better life for their kids, but not at the expense of seeing them fat, well fed slaves!
I try not to despair. I try to stay positive. And I know that, on a certain level, no man is truly free. And I try to remember that the greatest saints showed their devotion to Christ in the most despotic times. But in the back of my mind, I’m always hearing the song…
“Is the best of the free life behind us now? Are the good times really over for good?”
And no…..I chose “barely care” not so much because I think they do.It was an artsy fartsy, poetic thing. I’m trying to conjure visions of barrenness. Their care for us is barren, like the Sahara Desert.
      Thanks for the thoughtful comments!
